Bramble Tyne - Small Suburban Front and Rear Gardens

In addition the client was keen to introduce fragrance into the garden. The planting design is simple with fewer species repeated throughout to give a consistency and flow to the whole scheme.
The client, an interior designer and her partner, a builder designed and built the hard landscaping themselves with an emphasis on the lawn and a raised seating area at the bottom of the garden. Some planting areas were created from raised sleepers and borders were kept to a minimum width to accommodate the maximum area possible for the lawn.
The rear garden is north facing and lies over solid alkaline chalk with little top soil for planting. The front garden is south facing. A great deal of ground work in both the front and rear gardens had to be carried out before planting could begin and top soil imported.
Because of the limited planting space it was important to choose species which would give more than one season of interest and so many of the plants specified are evergreen in addition to their natural season of interest. Some planting will take a while to mature, especially the climbers and those plants bought in 9cm pots.
Tulips and Alliums were planted in the front garden in the Autumn to give interest in the Spring and early Summer and to fill out the gaps in the design.
