By Vicki Davis, Director of Buckinghamshire based CGLA Design and Landscaping. This heavenly space is a little larger than a traditional courtyard, but the client had always wanted a courtyard whilst still retaining a lawn and rich planting.

Dappled shade and structure are provided by the “Roof-Form” Acer campestre trees adjacent to a simple lawn edged with clay pavoirs which also form the details and paths.

Despite the small space, several distinct seating areas nestle in amongst the planting, providing private spaces and enticing destinations within the garden.

The main view from the French windows is framed by the trees, and the beds beneath form a rich layering of planting giving depth to the space and enclosing the small firepit area.

There is plenty to delight the plant lover, with colourful perennials mid sized shrubs and grasses to give a modern cottage garden feel, but a little neater, lower maintenance and with a long-lasting season of interest.

Vicki has managed to fit in a large pergola over a dining area, partially tucked away so as not to dominate the space

and the garden is enhanced by a specimen Forest Pansy underplanted with Hakonechloa grasses.

The result is a pleasing space, calm and inviting, providing the client with multiple views and spaces to sit despite its compact scale.
