Crabtree & Evelyn Garden

At the centre of the Garden, a contemporary Pavilion rises from nature. This striking structure houses a Botanical Studio, where the spectacle of perfumers creating fragrances  with a copper still and the plants grown within the garden, is on view to the public.

This striking structure references the history of the company within its fibres. The timber used will be Malus sylvestris (Crab Apple), which is the Crabtree & Evelyn logo and Ulmus minor (Elm), a species which John Evelyn is said to have saved from extinction.

Complementing the timber, the use of copper and glass throughout the garden echoes the distillery equipment used historically within the 'Still Room'. The garden surrounding the Pavilion will engage the senses, both visually and through the intoxicating scent. The planting palette will contain species that have traditionally been used in the distillation of perfumes.

The garden structure will feature a base, middle and top level, mimicking the three notes that make up a perfume, The Base, Heart and Top Note. Each level will be planted with species specific to that 'note'. The planting will be in single species raised beds, 'mono-planting', so that the scent of each ingredient has the maximum impact.
