Inspired by the concept of intelligent homes, LG’s Smart Garden was created to demonstrate how technology can be incorporated harmoniously into the garden, as well as the home. Designer Hay Joung Hwang’s vision for 21stCentury gardens stems from a personal belief that a home is more than a lifeless space people inhabit.
“I have always enjoyed the idea that as inhibitors of a space we can interact with our homes and gain so much more than just shelter and warmth from them. My garden concept is an extension of this and the technology is really only just starting to become available.”
By juxtaposing formal and informal, as well as naturalism and artificialism, Hwang demonstrates a metaphor for modern life. With a Scandinavian influence, the Smart Garden’s bright colour choices within the minimalist design are softened by a planting scheme with a ‘natural’ character. The mix of herbaceous plants adds a soft quality, while multi-stemmed trees provide privacy and filter views from the house.
Hwang’s plant selection was both thoughtful and deliberate. “I wanted to achieve a very natural and bright style with a strong romantic look throughout the garden. I have based my supporting palette on the colours of white, beige and black in order to give a strong, contemporary aesthetic. I’m very much looking for a ‘decorated’ feeling. In order to keep it stylish, however, I am employing pale tones of blues and pinks to soften the contrast and make the whole experience more subtle and spacious.”
