Emma Bannister CMLI & Ben Donadel of EMJ architects Have designed this years RHS Hampton Court Flower Show Garden for The National Association of Premenstrual Syndrome
Visitors will first see an area of hazel woodland with native ground planting. The inside of the garden is hidden from view behind a curving willow screen. As visitors walk into the garden and along the curving path, the inside gradually reveals itself through gaps in the screen, until a large window offers a clear view of the central feature - a contorted hazel.
The garden is inspired by the stories of those who suffer from severe premenstrual syndrome. The healthy, normal and energetic feel of the outside contrasts sharply with the solitary, maniacal and distorted mood of the inside. The outside and inside are connected by the willow structures - symbolizing the effect of fluctuating hormones in the brain.
