Designed by Christine Wilkie. The owners of this small, 55 sqm sloping garden in south-west London wanted a seamless transition from their recently renovated home.
The contemporary design takes advantage of the change in ground levels to create an outdoor room featuring a lower-level sandstone patio for entertaining and eating al fresco and an upper level for play and relaxation.
A key requirement was low-maintenance, as well as play-space for two small children. The design used a quality artificial lawn which gives the illusion of grass but without the mowing and provides a safe and clean surface for the children to play on.
An existing large Buddha was used as a main focal point in the garden, while a made-to-measure garden bench doubles as extra storage space for garden tools and children’s toys.
Two raised planting beds link the upper and lower levels while a third bed in timber sleepers forms a small vegetable garden for the children to the rear corner of the garden.
The contemporary garden style is complemented with bespoke planters with an overall planting style that combines Acers and bamboos with cottage garden perennials.
