The Hartley Botanic Garden

MacDonald’s design creates a garden celebrating the best of British engineering innovation by featuring one of the British-engineered glasshouse structures for which Hartley Botanic are so well known. The focal point of the design is a stunning, modern glasshouse, attached to a traditional walled garden and surrounded by water and woodland.

One might imagine the owner to be a gentleman with a large garden who wants a glasshouse that is both a retreat and a home for an assortment of tropical, aquatic and carnivorous plants. This glass haven for plants and people will also afford excellent views of the surrounding pond and woodland planting.

To demonstrate Hartley Botanic suitability for contemporary as well as period homes, this design combines a modern glasshouse with a traditional walled garden. The glasshouse design is modern, the aluminum supports powdered-coated with a matt bronze finish so as not to contrast harshly with the wall.

The woodland planting and calm pool surrounding the structure evoke images of the quintessential rural garden in southern England. To complete the illusion that this glasshouse is attached to a walled garden, a mix of vegetables and perennials can be seen where the walled garden would end.
