By West London based garden designer Jonathan Snow. This year, Jonathan and Trailfinders want to transport visitors several thousand miles west around the globe, to the temperate rainforests of South America, specifically Chile, a destination that’s increasing in popularity for Trailfinders.
Chile is a long thin country, more than 2,500 miles from north to south, and narrower than 100 miles in places. Sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and Andes mountain range to the west and east respectively, and the freezing Antarctic South and hot and arid Atacama Desert in the north, Chile is something of a biogeographic island, with, as a result of millions of years of isolation, a high number of endemic plants.
The temperate rainforest zone occurs towards the south of the country, and is characterized by not just high rainfalls, but relatively cool temperatures, a climate in fact not dissimilar to parts of the UK.
The garden will also feature a red walkway, winding its way sinuously around the rugged landscape, trees and water.
