Urban plant lovers kitchen garden

Both love to play host so it is fitted with an outdoor kitchen for entertaining. The walls and kitchen units are finished in shiplap cladding in the local vernacular style. The house dates from the 1700's and the original vaulted undercrofts are preserved beneath the garden. A 1940's concrete bomb shelter and outside WC were demolished to create the new space. Bold architectural planting, all hardy in Broadstairs and much of it evergreen, dominates the garden which is now the centre of life at the weekend home and is used and admired constantly, whatever the weather.

As the original vaulted undercrofts are preserved beneath the small garden, the design and construction had to keep this in mind. The planting areas are kept away from the centre of the site avoiding putting structural stress on the 18th C structure below.

The outdoor fitted kitchen was sited in the shadier corner of the garden. The ceramic, stainless steel, slate and wood finishes are selected and detailed to work outdoors and blend into the garden.

All the plants selected for the project are happy to 'be beside the sea-side'!

The bold textural planting includes Geranium maderense, Lyonothamnus asplenifolius floribundus, Beschorneria yuccoides, Melainthus major and Libertia grandiflora
