Clip hedge to desired shape (optional)

Optional - if you would like a shaped hedge.

After the first year of growth, start clipping the sides of the hedge into the desired shape one to two times during summer (until late August). When the hedge has reached its desired height, then you can think about trimming the top too.

Don't let the hedge get too long before trimming it to shape, as the woodier the growth gets, the harder it is to get a uniform, neat finish.

Remember that hedges grow best when they taper slightly with a wider base. This allows light and water to reach the whole hedge, keeping it dense right down to the base.
