Cultural control of bacterial canker

Prune infected branches in summer to minimise the risk of silver leaf. Remove all cankered material, pruning back to healthy wood. Immediately paint the cut area with wound paint.

Ideally, purchase cultivars that are more resistant to canker. Resistant cherry cultivars include 'Merla', 'Merpet', 'Merton Glory', and 'Merton Premier'. Resistant plum cultivars include 'Marjorie's Seedling' and 'Warwickshire Droope'.
