Cultural control of crown rot

There are numerous pathogens that cause crown rot in plants. This makes it difficult to identify the specific disease attacking your plant. Prevention throught good cultural practices is the best way to control crown rot in the garden.

- Except for moisture-loving or bog plants, make sure the soil in the garden is well-drained. Add organic matter to clay prior to planting.

- If an infection is present, avoid spreading pathogens or contaminated soil around the garden. Thoroughly disinfect any tools and footwear used in infected areas.

- Avoid laying mulch thicker than 8cm (3"). Keep mulch from touching the base of trunks and stems.

- Take care not to damage trees and shrubs with lawn or cultivation equipment.

- Do not allow grass to grow up to the trunk of trees and shrubs.
