There are a number of ways to prevent or control fusarium wilt in the garden:
- Remove and dispose of infected plants as soon as the disease is detected. Do not add infected plants to compost heaps or bins.
- Disinfect tools and shoes after handling diseased plants.
- Disinfect any pots that were used to grow infected plants.
- Avoid replanting with the same species for 4-5 years. Alternatively, replace infected soil with fresh soil from another part of the garden.
- Whenever possible, select disease-resistant cultivars. Seed catalogues usually indicate which plants are resistant.
- Grafted vegetables, particularly tomatoes, are available with fusarium-resistant rootstock.
- Purchase or obtain seeds, cuttings, or young plants from reputable sources.
