There a number of ways to control or prevent rose rust in the garden:
- In spring, prune off infected branches as soon as the fungus is detected.
- Collect and destroy fallen leaves to minimise the number of overwintering fungal spores. Do not all these leaves to compost heaps or bins.
- If the fungus persists, consider replacing the rose with a more resistant cultivar. If replacing with a new rose, be mindful of rose replant disease. Do not plant the replacement rose in the exact same spot as the one removed.
- Avoid planting roses too densely. This will reduce the risk of cross-infection.
- Prune regularly to allow good air circulation in the plant.
- Plant roses in full sun and well-drained soil.
