Cultural control of stem and bulb nematode (eelworm)

Cutural methods are the only way to prevent or treat stem and bulb eelworm infestations. Practice good garden hygiene, rotate crops, and regularly weed since weeds can host eelworms. Purchase quality bulbs from reputable suppliers.

When an eelworm presence is confirmed, dig out any damaged plant material as well as any plants within a one metre radius of infected plants. Burn or dispose of this material immediately. Do not add to compost bins or heaps. Thoroughly clean any tools and shoes used with contaminated material. If possible, infested soil should be left fallow for at least three years. Promptly remove any weeds in this area as they can host eelworms.
