Once club root is present in the garden, it is nearly impossible to eliminate. Take steps to avoid introducing the disease by purchasing plants from a guaranteed, club root-free supplier.
If the disease is present, the following can be done to protect plants from infection:
- Grow seedlings to a robust size prior to transplanting into the garden. Transplant in pots of a least 9cm in diameter so the roots grow into affected soil with a larger than usual, healthy root system.
- Disinfect any tools and equipment, including footwear, after use.
- Raise the soil pH as this reduced the effects of club root.
- Ensure there is adequate soil drainage.
- Promptly remove susceptible weeds like charlock, shepherd's purse, and wild radish.
- Use club root-resistant cultivars.
