Take a look at plants during winter, before any new growth emerges, and cut back only any dead, unsightly foliage and flower stems.
Use sharp secateurs to take out the dead, damaged or diseased foliage, stems or branches. Choose secateurs which are the right size. Using a size that is too large can cause excessive strain. Take care to check the safety catch to see if you can operate it properly (left-handed models are also available).
