Cut back stems when planting as a hedge (optional)

When planting as a new hedge, which is best done in spring between March and April, cut back all the stems by one-third.

Repeat this again at the same time in the second year too. This is to prevent having lots of upright stems, but very little grow to the sides and from the base.
