Cut this plant back to 20 cm from base in autumn, or wait until early spring in cold areas.
There are different schools of thought about when to prune back grasses and herbaceous perennials. By leaving the growth on the plant to overwinter, you help protect it during the winter, and provide place for wildlife to hide during the cold months. If you leave it too late into spring however, you can risk damaging new emerging growth. Both methods are right - choose the one you like best.
Choose secateurs which are the right size. Using a size that is too large can cause excessive strain. Take care to check the safety catch to see if you can operate it properly (left-handed models are also available).
