Compound or general purpose fertilisers provide all three major elements (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) for hungry fruit and veg. and sometimes some of the minor elements too. They can be used as a general feed following the manufacturers guidelines, adding nitrogen or potassium where necessary. Alternatively, many manufacturers have tried to simplify fertiliser selection by producing products labeled for specific plants or situations. There are feeds for crops, such as tomatoes, as well as uses, such as container plants. These can be a good choice if you find selecting fertilisers confusing, but are usually a more expensive way of feeding your plants. Follow manufacturers guidelines on application frequency. Too much fertiliser can be a waste, and too much chemical fertiliser can cause pollution in groundwater and rivers. Don't turn into a hypochondriac about your plants. If the soil is enriched regularly, and fertiliser applied to those plants that need it, all will usually be well.
