Cultural methods are the only way to prevent the establishment and spread of stem and bulb eelworms. Practice good garden hygiene, crop rotation, and regular weed control (weeds can host eelworm populations). Purchase quality bulbs from reputable suppliers - a few infested plants can soon contaminate an entire garden. When an eelworm presence is confirmed, dig out any damaged plant material, as well as any plant material within a 1 metre radius of infected plants. Do not add this plant material to garden compost bins or heaps. Thoroughly disinfect tools and shoes used in contaminated areas. If possible, infested soil should be left fallow for at least three years. Promptly remove weeds in this area since they can host eelworms.
