Mulching fruit trees

Pears, plums and damson trees need additional water in the summer and will benefit from spring mulching. Newly planted fruit trees need regular watering and should be mulched to conserve moisture and promote strong growth. Mulch annually with bulky organic matter, such as stable or farmyard manure, mushroom compost, spent hops, leafmould or garden compost.
