Plant bareroot deciduous hedges

Plant bareroot deciduous hedges from late autumn to early spring.

To plant, dig a trench 90 cm wide. Dig in organic matter. Peg out a line along the centre of the trench to mark where to plant. Space plants approximately 45cm apart along the line. Plant at the same depth the plant was previously grown (you should see a faint mark on the base of the plant above the roots where the soil was). Water in well. Water and weed regularly the first spring and summer after planting. Feed in spring.

Avoid planting in waterlogged or frozen soil. If the soil is frozen or wet, heel plants in temporarily in a sheltered area of the garden. To do this, dig a trench to hold the roots and cover the roots with soil. If there is no suitable area in the garden to heel the plants in, keep the wrappings around the plants and keep the roots moist. Unwrap the top growth (if wrapped in straw). Plant out as soon as possible.
