For perennial meadows, choose an open, sunny spot with poor to moderately fertile soil. If the soil is very rich, consider removing the top layer of soil first.
For small areas, remove weeds by hand or cover with black plastic or other weed-suppressing material for at least three months prior to sowing. For larger areas, particularly those with vigorous, perennial weeds, spray weeds with a non-residual systemic glyphosate-based weedkiller.
Dig over and rotavate/rototill the soil to create a fine tilth. Lightly firm and rake. Avoid adding manure or fertiliser.
Allow 4-6 weeks for the soil to settle and for any weed seeds to germinate. Remove or kill weeds newly sprouted weeds before sowing.
