This is an optional instruction, as some people prefer to allow seed heads to remain on the plant through winter.
You may have experienced some problems with self-seeding, in which case you may want to prune now. Some flowering plants, are worth deadheading to prevent them from self-seeding themselves all over the place and causing a 'weed' problem. Cut back flowering stems before they have a chance to seed.
Tip: Some seeds heads can ripen to maturity even after they have been pruned from the plant, so ensure that you clean up all prunings.
