Sowing outside in the south may be reliable, but elsewhere sow under cloches or in pots indoors. Use 3 in. biodegradable pots (roots must not be disturbed) sowing 2 seeds in deep in seed compost. When growth starts remove the weaker seedling. Harden off before planting out 50 cm (18 in) between plants. If sowing directly into the soil, sow in rectangular blocks not rows. This will help ensure pollination of female flowers. Sow 2 seeds 1 in deep 50 cm (18 in) from each other in length and width.
