my Acanthus is taking over...

my Acanthus is taking over...

Question from Jacquie

How can I control the very strong expanding roots of my Acanthus? It has not flowered this year but I'm getting lots of shoots and I am concerned it may damage the concrete steps and path with its deep roots.

I think digging out what comes to close to the path is the best option, but make sure you get it all, even little bits of root will shoot again. I am still pulling up new plants from an acanthus I 'removed' 2 years ago in my own garden. Regularly picking the leaves off seems to keep it under control, or slowly eradicates it.
Also, you are saying it has not flowered, does it get enough sun? You could dig up the bits that are coming to close to the path and maybe replant them in a sunnier position?
    Good luck!

Thank you so much for this Franne. Hope the roots don't invade next door too. Kind regards, Jacquie
