Can anyone identify this mystery plant please? It is about 5ft high and used as a hedge in my village. Its really fragrant ?

    Hi Karen, on our social media there is one vote for "Berberis (thunbergii)"

    Some more suggestions include "would suggest it’s some sort of Akebia, which is actually a climber. Not entirely sure of the variety. Are the flowers yellow, as they appear, or has the camera made them look that way? It could be Akebia quinata ’Cream Form’."
    "If it has thorns it could be a Berberis darwinii"
    "If it has sharp lethal thorns it may be hawthorn"
    "Berberis stenophylla I think"
    "Or possibly berberis amstelveen?"
    "Could be a Berberis but they normally have spikes (can't really see these in the photo). Often used in hedging."
    "It looks a kind of Hypericum"
