No. It is best to prune H. macrophylla in early to mid-spring. Trim back old flowered heads to the first bud or pair of buds below the head. Cut back 1/3 to 1/4 of the oldest flowered shoots to the base.

Should my macrophylla Cardinal Red Hydrangea have been cut back before now?
