Corylus tend to have suckers come up all the time, so it is an ongoing task to remove them, go as deep as you can and cut them off.

There are shoots growing out from the base. Should I remove these

As it has a 4m height and spread I should imagine very frequently or it will be stressed and starved.

Oh, thanks for the reassurance Patricia. I've had it for 3 or 4 years now, and I haven't noticed it doing that before, but it's quite a small one so probably not very mature yet - don't know if that would make a difference, or maybe I just haven't been very observant before!

Another query - how often should I re-pot it, and how will I know when it needs it?

Thanks.

It' meant to do that.
Red Majestic is at its best in the spring as the new, bright red foliage emerges and begins to grow. As summer approaches and as the temperatures rise, the foliage turns to a dark burgundy and then by mid-summer the mature foliage turns to a dark green.
The new foliage will emerge red and you will have double colour

My pot-grown Red Majestic was looking a lovely bronzy-red, but this summer it's turned a dull green. What would have caused this, and what can I do to restore the red foliage?

Thanks.

Hi, Philip,
Is it pruned regularly to encourage flower/fruit production? The pruning advice/'how to grow' information on the 'Red Majestic' page here on Shoot is quite thorough on how to go about pruning.
All the best,
Kathy C

why doesn't my Corylus Majestic produce catkins and nuts? It is treated exactly the same as the green variety.
