Thanks Kathy. Having checked photos from when we first moved in, (15yrs) it really has grown some. Whilst we cannot see any damage, it does seem sensible to chop down being so close to house-its just so sad to do such a thing to a very very healthy tree, esp brimming with cones. Your comment re space caused by rotted roots has now given me another worry, but think its gotta go. Cheers. Darren

Unfortunately, I agree with the advice you were given. It sounds like your 'Watereri' is doing what it does - grows slow for quite some time, keeping a semi-dwarf size and then eventually gets large over time. P. sylvestris can develop a taproot but the majority of its roots are horizontal, often within 20cm of the soil surface. A tree that size, with that type of root system so close to the house, is bound to cause structural damage. And upon removal, the eventual space caused by rotted roots could cause subsidence.

how close can a scots pine be to house / foundations. i have one taller than 2 story house, about 5 metres from house and right next to patio. have beem advised its too close, but would like second opinion. cant bare to cut it down.
