Rhododendron dies off

Rhododendron dies off

Question from Shoot User

Hi,

I seem to have a problem with my plants, they seems to be OK until the top leaves sort of dry out and curl up and this affects the flower buds too, one died already last year, the other two are producing new green leaves from the top (where the buds were), but not sure they'll not get the problem too!

I think I am doing everything right (mulching, pH, moisture, etc), but plants are simply not happy!! Please help!!

I'll try to add some pics asap

Thanks a lot!

    Hi, Toni,
Would you briefly tell me what you do in terms of mulcing and maintaining soil pH? Also, how long ago were these planted?

Hi Kathy, thanks for your post.

I use leafmould mulch and acidic compost as topsoil too in spring. I've had those in their current spot for nearly 3 years now, but plants are not doing well (one died off last spring, just after the flowers faded).

I also have a couple of decideous "knaphill" azaleas that so far so good.

I came back home late tonight, too dark for taking a picture, will try tomorrow and post it straightaway.

      Thanks Kathy for your time!

And how is your April where you are? Here is unusually warm (some 10C above average) and dry (it usually rains a lot in April and May over here...)

      Bye for now

      T.

I have now identified the plants I have, they are Rhododendron "Christmas Cheer". The new leaves are coming out OK, I wonder if they'll stay OK too
