Camellia black sooty deposits

Camellia black sooty deposits

Question from Shoot User

I see from the web site that these deposits are caused by aphids but the web site does not suggest how to deal with them. Have you any suggestions?
I was thinking of spraying with black fly spray; would this be suitable?
Many thanks in advance.

    Hi, Tom,
You have two issues going on - the aphids that created the honeydew that dripped on the leaves and the fungus that grew on the drops of honeydew. You can remove the affected leaves or wash off the mould with water. Then, control the aphids with an insecticide or insecticidal soap (or, if you want an organic option, a spray made of crushed garlic in water with added washing up liquid). Priority is to get rid of the aphids since they are the root of the problem.
