Skimmia turning yellow and dying

Skimmia turning yellow and dying

Question from M McC

There are a couple of large Skimmia in my garden, which are probably over 20 years old. Both have quite yellow leaves. Our soil is acid and I put down ericaceous soil improver last autumn but it hasn't helped. One of the bushes is now dying back, with dry, dead leaves.I am going to try Epsom salts next, but it's this likely to save it or is it just too old?

the first question is are they getting too much sun, skimmias are shade lovers even dry shade, next look at the underside of the leaves and see if they have any mites, if you see cob webs, they can also be the problem, if so wash the shrub with soapy water, give them a good feed in mid March and see if they turn around.

Hello Elaine, Thank you very much for replying. I don't think it is getting too much sun, as it's in a shady spot, and has been there for a long time, although there was certainly new sun than usual this summer. It night have been snow damage in the winter, though. I don't know if snow works cause this. That's a very good point about checking the leaves for Moore's. I did not think of that, but will check that out. Thank you again.

I also use horticulture oil this time of the year to kill the eggs of harmful insects, it is organic and if sun is not the problem then mites could be it, snow does not damage skimmia, it is one tough shrub.
