Hi, Linda,
If it is at least 1-2 years old, particularly on good rootstock, you should get nuts now. Cornus avellana is somewhat self-fertile but doesn't do the job very well. For good crops of fruit (nuts) you really need another hazel planted nearby for adequate pollination.
