I have noticed lots of ants crawling up and down my sambucus. Previously there were tiny little black eggs which I brushed off but I am concerned that the ants are weakening the plant.I sprayed the plant with a mild solution of washing up liquid after brushing off the eggs but this has not so far deterred the ants. Any suggestions on getting rid of the ants and strengthening the plant? Thanks.

    Hi, Jenneffer,
    I am thinking your Sambucus has blackfly - also known as black aphids. They are very tiny which is why you thought they were eggs. Aphids will suck the sap from the plant and typically attack young, tender shoots and flowers, etc.The ants are attracted to the honeydew the aphids secrete. The washing up liquid will work for a little while but you will need to repeat this frequently. You can purchase an organic insecticidal soap from garden centres which will be stronger, but will need more than one application as well. Strongest defense is a chemical pesticide.

    .....thank you so much. I will try the organic solution mentioned. Not sure however whether the plant is still alive!
