should my witch hazel not have been tampered with?

Hi there,

I have a lovely witch hazel in my front garden and it appears that in the same huge pot another plant with vivid red branches was growing right next to it. I thought it must be a weed and pulled it out without researching it! It had a very good root system - could it be a shoot out from my w hazel, i know they are decidious............ no sign of buds yet either.

    Sometimes a shoot comes up from below the graft union and should be removed, if the plant is grafted, but having a red stem? that is a puzzle.

      Hi Elaine, thanks for your info, maybe it was another plant that decided to join my witch hazel in its pot.

      The witch hazel is very brittle and has no buds at all this year, any idea's?

    If your plant has no sign of life - have you tried scraping a bit of the bark with your thumb nail. If the layer underneath the bark is green then your plant is alive. If you did not plant the other plant which appeared it could be a seed blown in or dropped by birds.
    I once tried growing a w hazel in a container and it didn't survive it's first winter.
