Question from Susan Drew

I have planted a Cotinus 'Grace' in a bed which is now crowded. Can I restrict it successfully by annual coppicing?

    Hi, Susan,
Oh, such a lovely plant! Yes, it can be coppiced which will result in larger leaves on the new growth. Cotinus 'Grace' is here on Shoot and if you add it to your 'Plants I Have' list, you will get reminders and instructions on how and when to coppice, as well as all information on its care.
    All the best,

      Hi Kathy
Thanks for your advice. Do you think it can also be trimmed during the growing season to create a small bush? Currently, the branches are about 6ft long and arching and look beautiful, but the base of the plant is rather bare.

        Hi, Susan,
I wouldn't prune Cotinus in the growing season. Coppicing will take care of some of the bareness at the base, thought that is somewhat the nature of Cotinus.
