    Hi,
It's hard to tell. Are the dark spots the concern or the discoloration to the bark? Are any of the spot weeping? Is the foliage damaged in any way? Are any other plants in your garden showing this type of problem?

Thank you for your reply Kathy. The discolouration of the bark is the main concern as there is a space behind the discoloured area; I can push the bark in about 5mm. There is a little weeping. The foliage seems ok but there is a small gap on the side of the discolouration but that may have been the previous owners pruning. No other plants around seem to have the same problem.
