Moving astelia silver spear

I have an Astelia in my garden that is now far too big for my garden (about 1m high x 1.5m wide. I suspect it's going to be hard to dig up so I wondered if I can cut the leaves back to make it easier to access or whether this will kill it? Any advice gratefully received!

    Hi, Suzy,
    You can cut it back, just expect it to take some time to recover. They take some time to recover from transplanting and/or division so don't be surprised if it looks sad for a while. Cutting back isn't usually recommended, but I know that many mail order places (particularly in its native NZ) will cut them back and ship them bare root.
