Won't flower

Won't flower

Question from Shoot User

I have had this plant for a few years now. It flowered in the first couple of years but since then has not flowered at all. I have tried pruning and not pruning. It's in a sunny, exposed position in a north facing garden. Any suggestions?

    Hi, Marion,
Two ideas come to mine - soil and/or feeding. H. quercifolia likes neutral to acid soil. Do you know your soil's ph? Other thought is it might just want a good feed give it the boost it needs to flower well. Have you checked out the H. quercifolia page here on Shoot? It might have some further clues as to what is going on.
    All the best,

    Hi Marion
Hydrangea Q flowers on the previous year's growth, unlike some other hydrangeas which flower on the current season's growth. So it's very important not to prune for at least one year and then to only very lightly prune immediately after flowering. Don't prune in spring as you will remove the flower buds.

Many thanks to both of you for your advice. I did both things suggested - I didn't prune it and I gave it a good feed with potash and I got a result! It has been flowering splendidly for weeks now. Further research revealed that Hydrangea Quercifolia is the one hydrangea you shouldn't prune. Feeding with potash in spring has given it an added boost to produce magnificent flowers.
