How do I know when my plant is completely dead?

How do I know when my plant is completely dead?

My blue wave hydrangeas and radican gardenia still look completely bare like they did this winter, but my august beauty gardenias and oakleaf hydrangeas are growing well. If there are no leaves, did my plant completely die? I am new to gardening and just started last year.

You should try a 'scratch test' - just scrape of a bit of the bark with your thumb nail. If the surface underneath is green then your plants maybe just slow at starting. If it is brown then more than likely have died but give them a little while longer just in case!
