The best time to cut back Bergenia is early spring. That would also be a good time to lift and divide clumps if they are too crowded.

my bergenia is getting very long and straggly. can anyone tell me if it's safe to cut it back, when and how please

Bergenia cordifolia 'Purpurea' (Elephant's ears 'Purpurea') has been used in The HESCO Garden by Leeds City Council for Chelsea Flower Show 2009.
