Carex pendula

Many thanks, Kathy - seeing as they are so huge, can they be cut back with a hedge trimmer to make the dividing more manageable?

Hi,
It sounds like your Carex are ready for dividing. When they start looking messy (and maybe the middle is dying out?) that means the clumps are overcrowded and need to be split up. Divide in autumn or spring and give them some time to establish so they can get back to their former glory. If you haven't already, add this to your list of 'Plants I Have' to know when/how to keep them looking their best. This video on Shoot will tell you how to best divide your plants. https://https://www.shootgardening.com/article/video-how-to-divide-plants
All the best!

I have several of these thuggish plants in my garden - they're 3-4 years old and are looking a mess. Is there a good time of year to cut them back without killing them and can I use a hedge trimmer? Will they ever look as good as they did in their first year?

Carex pendula (Pendulous sedge) has been used in The HESCO Garden by Leeds City Council for Chelsea Flower Show 2009.
