Whirling Butterflies - poor growth and some plants died

Whirling Butterflies - poor growth and some plants died

Question from Shoot User

Several of my plants have died after the winter and the remaining two have very poor growth to date. I am puzzled as to why they have not taken after being planted last summer when they seemed to be settling quite well in my garden. Could it be due to all the rain in early spring? The soil is well-drained, but there is nothing else that seems obvious to me. Any tips welcome, please.

These plants come from Texas and Mexico. They are Hardy but dislike wet ground.
They need lots of grit to provide good drainage incorporated into the planting hole.
You might rescue the ones you still have by replanting and adding a thick layer of grit or fine gravel under the plants, so water can drain away from them.
    They need full sun too.
You could grow them in a clay pot and move it in winter to the greenhouse or cold frame to keep them on the dry side.
