You are not alone with temperamental Heuchera. A couple of things could be causing poor growth:
1) Even though sold as a shade-loving plants, Heuchera do best in partial shade.
2) Heuchera roots tend to 'lift' out of the soil over time. They should be lifted and replanted or mulched every year.
3) Heuchera do best in neutral soil and they don't like clay - loam or sand is best.
4) Climate - not sure where you live but too hot and humid could cause poor growth. Too dry or too wet could as well.
Any of the above sound like possibilities?
