How to grow a new plant from eucaliptus sideroxylon rosea

How to grow a new plant from eucaliptus sideroxylon rosea

I have one tree in my garden, which is very rare in my country (Chile) and want to make new plants from it but do not know how to do it. How do I get the seeds from the fruits which are so hard? When green? When dry? How to plant them? Thanks for any advice.

    Hi, Maria,
Have a look at the plant page for Eucalyptus leucoxylon 'Rosea' here on Shoot - there is a lot of good info on seed propagation. As far as the seed capsules are considered, they must be fully ripe. Keep them in a warm, very dry place for several days before sowing. This helps making seed extraction easier. Having said that, you might need to 'encourage' the seed with a pen or knife tip. I have read that if you can't get the seeds out easily, try microwaving them for about a minute. Not sure if that is the best ides, though - you wouldn't want to cook the seed!
    Hope all of this helps

Usually I find that collecting the seed capsules when they have turned from green to grey or brown, then leaving them in a container on a relatively hot place, such as on top of a boiler or range cooker. Once the capsules are fully dry, they will usually open up and allow the seeds to fall out. This sort of replicated that natural flash fire scenario, which in the wild causes the seed to flow. With Eucalyptus there are usually a lot of aborted seed, and you can usually expect only the larger seeds to be viable. This is general to Eucalyptus, and not specific to your variety. Some Eucalyptus species are also subject to embryo dormancy, which can usually be overcome by storing the seed moist in a chiller for 6-8 weeks, or sowing in the autumn.
