Acer palmatum (any variety)

I recently bought one of these. It is growing against an east facing fence. I was advised to water it copiously while it was becoming established, and especially because of the hot weather. Some of the topmost leaves have shrivelled - possibly because of the sun catching them over the fence and the extreme heat. But today I noticed that the tips of many of the leaves have a tiny spot of brown on them. Might this be overwatering?
