Any perennial that is looking a little ragged can be cut down right to the ground, there are some perennials that are evergreen, berginias,hellebores and the rock garden type.

Best to cut back in early spring, just before new growth emerges.

planted one of these in summer. all foliage turned brown in this cold winter but still appears alive. looks very shabby. can i cut back now? or do i have to wait until spring to cut it back? thanks

Persicaria affinis 'Darjeeling Red' (Knotweed 'Darjeeling Red') has been used in The HESCO Garden by Leeds City Council for Chelsea Flower Show 2009.
