I'm on with my design of my garden using the garden layout tool and I've today been to a couple of nurseries having a look round. We're looking to have a an adult seating area and are thinking of using bamboo as the backdrop. The cost of one plant at the height we'd ideally like is about £30 but a amsall one is half the price. Does any one know how much I can expect the plants to grow per year?? We'll need a few for the seating area we have in mind and at £30 a pop it would be rather expensive!

    Hi Emma - Different types of bamboo grow to different sizes.

    Fast-growing and large bamboos include:
    Semiarundinaria fastuosa
    Pleioblastus variegatus

    Smaller, compact bamboos include:
    Pleioblastus variegatus
    Fargesia murielae 'Bimbo'

    So if you buy a small young plant of the right variety you should get the height you want when it grows to full height.

    The one you are looking at fargesia murieliae gets to about 4 meters when grown in ideal conditions in its native habitat. Let us know what you decide to buy!

      Thanks Nicola. Will get back to the nursery this weekend and see if they stock what you've suggested.

      My favourite nursery is actually in Preston. I'm in Bolton but my Dad lives in Preston so it's no real trouble going over there but I wondered if you knew of any reputable suppliers on line who are based in the north west as nursery's tend to stock the same plants year after year bar the odd addition?

    An interesting variation from bamboo might be Phyllostachys edulis which, as its name suggests, is edible and produces the familiar "bamboo Shoots" found in oriental eating houses. It also grows very fast and, whilst listed in the Shhot plant directory, there is no supplier shown. I beleive plants are available from "Hardybamboo.com" (though I must say that I have never used this supplier so cannot comment on how they perform).
